Not disagreeing on keeping up -- but we need to keep up for a different reason: these "new standards" aren't actually standards yet. We need to keep on top of the working groups and their drafts and proposals to ensure that they're spec'ing what we developers and designers need and want. And we need to keep on top of browser manufacturers to hold them accountable for implementing those specs correctly. (Not to mention, that they don't break legacy work.)

My original statement holds true, whether you're talking about standards new or old: there are still those out there who don't get it, and we still need to be talking about these basic principles!

I agree that there are plenty of people who still get it wrong, and I definitely think there's a place for outreach and education in our group. I just also think that a lot of people equate Web standards with "use CSS and valid (X)HTML" and that's a mentality that we need to combat. Standards are still important for many of the same reasons they were several years ago, but they're new standards and we need to keep up.

Looking ahead is very important for those of us "standards geeks". But, keep in mind that, in reality, only a sliver of all Web sites adhere to the principles that we Web Standards advocates espouse, and there are still many developers out there that need convincing, education, and hand-holding. Battles have been won, but the war is not over!
